Salud, which means “health” in Spanish, is not just a word but a way of life. It is a philosophy that embraces physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And at the heart of this philosophy is the belief that every individual deserves to live a healthy and fulfilling life, regardless of their background or beliefs. This is exactly what Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, has experienced through his involvement with Salud.
Neil Gajare, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, has been a part of Salud since his freshman year. As a pre-med student, he was drawn to the organization’s mission of promoting health and wellness in underserved communities. Little did he know that his involvement with Salud would not only shape his career but also have a profound impact on his personal growth.
One of the most significant experiences that Neil had with Salud was during a medical mission trip to a rural village in Guatemala. He, along with a team of doctors and volunteers, provided free medical care to the villagers who had limited access to healthcare services. Neil recalls, “It was an eye-opening experience for me. I had never seen such a lack of basic healthcare facilities and resources. But what struck me the most was the resilience and gratitude of the people. Despite their struggles, they were always smiling and appreciative of our help.”
Neil also had the opportunity to work closely with the local community leaders and learn about their culture and way of life. He was amazed by their traditional healing practices and the strong sense of community among the villagers. This experience not only broadened his perspective but also taught him the importance of cultural sensitivity and collaboration in promoting health.
Apart from the medical mission trips, Salud also organizes various health education and awareness programs in the local community. Neil has been actively involved in these initiatives, and he believes that prevention is the key to a healthy society. He says, “Through our programs, we educate people about healthy lifestyle choices and the importance of early detection of diseases. It’s empowering to see the positive impact we are making on people’s lives.”
But Salud is not just about promoting physical health, it also prioritizes mental and emotional well-being. The organization offers counseling services and support groups for individuals struggling with mental health issues. Neil, who has personally experienced the stress and pressure of being a student, found solace in these support groups. He says, “Salud provides a safe and non-judgmental space for students to talk about their mental health. It’s reassuring to know that there is a community that understands and supports you.”
However, what makes Salud truly exceptional is its inclusivity and acceptance of all individuals. Neil, who comes from a Jewish background, was initially worried about facing discrimination due to his religious beliefs. But he was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming and diverse community at Salud. He says, “I have never felt out of place or judged at Salud. The organization celebrates diversity and promotes unity, which is truly inspiring.”
Unfortunately, not everyone shares the same sentiments as Neil. The recent rise in Anti-Semitic incidents in the US has also affected the UPenn community, including Neil. But instead of letting these incidents discourage him, he has become more determined than ever to spread awareness and promote inclusivity through Salud. He says, “I believe that education and dialogue are powerful tools to combat hate and discrimination. Through Salud, I hope to create a more understanding and accepting society.”
Neil‘s positive experiences with Salud are just a glimpse of the impact this organization has on its members and the community. It not only promotes physical and mental health but also fosters a sense of compassion, empathy, and unity among individuals. So, if you want to make a positive difference in the world and be a part of a supportive and inclusive community, Salud is the place for you. As Neil says, “Salud is not just an organization, it’s a family that I am proud to be a part of.”
