After a 13-12 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Los Angeles Chargers’ disastrous 2023 season came to a merciful end.

It was a season defined by a seemingly endless string of close losses, key injuries, and the firing of Brandon Staley as head coach after fans had called for his dismissal going back to last season.

Job one for the Chargers is choosing a head coach who not only has the right coaching acumen but will also bring leadership and a winning culture to the long-tortured franchise.

Per Mike Garafolo, the team is interested in hiring Steve Wilks, who is currently the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

The #Chargers are requesting to interview #49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for their vacant head coaching job, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Wilks’ Niners defense was third in points allowed, eighth in yards this season after he went 6-6 as #Panthers interim HC.

Wilks, who is in his first season at the helm of the 49ers defense, has done an excellent job, as he has kept their defense at or near the top of the NFL.

That defense finished the season third in points allowed, and that prowess is arguably the biggest reason why San Francisco is favored to win the Super Bowl right now.

The Chargers were thought to have the talent to be a dark-horse Super Bowl contender each of the last two seasons, but instead, they have severely underperformed.

Wilks is likely to be seen as an underwhelming choice by perpetually frustrated Bolts fans, many of whom have been hoping for a heavyweight hire such as Jim Harbaugh or even Bill Belichick.

Harbaugh, the current head coach at the University of Michigan, had plenty of success coaching the Niners years ago, and he could be the man to establish a winning culture for the Chargers.
