Donald Trump has decided against testifying for a second time in his New York civil fraud trial, taking to social media to express his satisfaction and success with his previous testimony. The trial, brought on by New York Attorney General Letitia James, threatens Trump’s real estate empire and could damage his image as a successful businessman.
Trump announced his decision in an all-caps statement on his Truth Social platform, writing: “I WILL NOT BE TESTIFYING ON MONDAY.” He followed this up with “I HAVE ALREADY TESTIFIED TO EVERYTHING & HAVE NOTHING MORE TO SAY”, and added that James and other Democrats have weaponized the legal system to hinder his chances at retaking the White House.
Trump testified on November 6th, and was often defiant and combative. He defended his wealth and denied any wrongdoing, and sparred with the judge, who he criticized as an “extremely hostile judge.” He also slammed James as “a political hack.”
The state lawyers had the opportunity to cross-examine Trump, but his defense lawyers were the ones who led the questioning.
James sued Trump last year, claiming that he had duped banks, insurers and others by inflating his wealth on financial statements. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled before the trial that Trump and other defendants engaged in fraud and ordered a receiver to take control of some Trump properties, but an appeals court has paused that.
The judge is currently considering six other claims, including allegations of conspiracy and insurance fraud. James seeks penalties of more than $300 million and wants Trump banned from doing business in New York.
In recent days, Trump has been insistent on testifying again, even though some of his previous visits to the courthouse have resulted in him getting fined for disparaging the judge’s law clerk. His lawyer, Alina Habba, had discouraged Trump from taking the stand due to the gag order in place, but Trump was determined to take the stand and “for the old America that we know, not this America”.
Trump’s decision to not testify for a second time is a wise one, as it will save him from any more potential fines and keep his image intact. Trump’s testimony on November 6th was successful, and he showed that he is a successful businessman who is willing to fight for his rights. This decision is a testament to Trump’s character and determination, and shows that he is a strong and capable leader.
