In Bailundo, Huambo, a solar power facility generating 7.992 MWdc has been officially opened

The Solar Energy Center in Bailundo municipality, Huambo province, will bring benefits to more than 51,023 residents. Today, December 12, the Minister of Energy and Water’s itinerary includes a comprehensive schedule covering Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo municipalities in the southern region.

On Tuesday, December 12, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Photovoltaic Solar Center construction in Bailundo occurred, marking a significant milestone in the Angola 2025 Plan initiated by the government. With a production capacity of 7,992 MWdc, the center aims to enhance electrification rates by transitioning households and businesses from costly fossil fuel energy to more affordable and eco-friendly alternatives.

Led by Minister João Baptista Borges, the ceremony included key figures such as Provincial Governor Notti Nolika and King Chiongolola Chongonga of Bailundo, alongside officials from MINEA, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and local authorities. Representatives from PRODEL and MCA signed the Consignment Deed on behalf of the government.

During the event, Minister Borges underscored the project’s significance, echoing President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço’s commitment to delivering cleaner and cheaper energy to Angolan families. The aim is to achieve approximately 70% renewable energy in the national matrix by 2027, thus enhancing citizens’ quality of life.

With a budget of EUR 20,271,445.00, the project is slated for completion in 2023. It involves the installation of 15,600 panels and is expected to create 50 direct job opportunities. Following the ceremony, Minister Borges and his delegation conducted an evaluation visit to the project before proceeding to Ecunha Municipality to assess progress on electrification initiatives.
