Claudia Sheinbaum, the virtual presidential candidate from Morena, reiterated her commitment to protecting wages and employment benefits, emphasizing that the well-being of workers is closely linked to the overall prosperity of Mexico.
As a result, Sheinbaum called on the country’s workforce to support her during her upcoming pre-campaign for the presidency, which is set to begin on November 20.
“Beyond merely forming a party alliance, our progress depends on our unity with the people of Mexico. (…) We cannot change our direction; the way forward is the Fourth Transformation,” she stated.
The Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation also highlighted the rise in the minimum wage in Mexico, which has improved under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration.
The Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) expressed its backing for Sheinbaum, pledging to create 10,000 Committees for the Defense of Labor Transformation to support her candidacy.
Notably, CATEM, led by Senator Pedro Haces Barba, encompasses over 1,194 union organizations across all 32 states of the nation.
During CATEM’s Ordinary National Congress at Arena Ciudad de México, Secretary General Pedro Haces Barba vowed to ensure the continuity of the Fourth Transformation, stressing that Mexico is at a pivotal moment and adding that “Mexico is now spelled with an ‘M’ for woman,” in reference to his support for Claudia Sheinbaum and her achievements.
“We are at a critical juncture, which is why, from this Congress, together with Doctor Claudia Sheinbaum, we reaffirm our dedication to the values of the Fourth Transformation,” he emphasized.
Pedro Haces Barba recalled that following the passage of the Labor Reform, past conflicts between employers were settled, and through collective efforts, a new form of unionism has arisen that protects workers’ rights while honoring their wages and benefits.
Furthermore, the senator and CATEM leader expressed optimism that in the coming year, employers would recognize workers’ circumstances and provide a significant wage increase.
“Dear employers, I respectfully appeal to you. We hope that this year you will consider the current situation, Paco (Francisco Cervantes, president of the CCE), do not overlook it, and think about a substantial wage increase for all Mexicans,” he remarked.
He also highlighted the labor advancements achieved during the current administration, including granting unions the freedom to elect their leaders, eliminating outsourcing, increasing profit-sharing, and raising the minimum wage.
