Crews battle wildfires in Carolinas amid dry conditions, gusty winds

Crews battled wildfires in North and South Carolina on Sunday as dry conditions and gusty winds fueled the flames. Evacuations were ordered in some areas as the National Weather Service warned of increased fire danger in the region.

In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency to support the wildfire response effort. A statewide burning ban remained in effect as crews worked to contain a fire in the Carolina Forest area, west of the coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. Residents in several neighborhoods were ordered to evacuate, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission reported that the blaze had burned approximately 4.9 square kilometers (1.9 square miles) with 0% containment as of Sunday afternoon. However, no structures had been lost and no injuries had been reported. The 410 personnel involved in the effort were expected to remain until the fire was fully contained, according to county fire officials. Evacuations were expected to remain in place on Sunday, and residents in the Carolina Forest area were advised to be prepared with go-bags and emergency plans in case more evacuations were necessary.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, the U.S. Forest Service reported multiple wildfires burning on more than 161.87 hectares (400 acres) in four forests across the state. The largest fire, estimated at 121.41 hectares (300 acres), was located in Uwharrie National Forest, about 80.47 kilometers (50 miles) east of Charlotte.

In the small southwestern town of Tryon in Polk County, North Carolina, some residents were urged to evacuate on Saturday as a fire rapidly spread in the area. As of Sunday, those evacuations remained in effect. The fire had burned approximately 161.87 hectares (400 acres) with 0% containment, according to the Polk County Emergency Management/Fire Marshal’s office. The North Carolina Forest Service was conducting water drops and back-burning operations on the ground, and residents in the area were advised to expect a lot of smoke during these operations.

The cause of these fires has not yet been determined. However, officials are working tirelessly to contain the flames and protect the affected communities. The efforts of the fire crews and emergency responders have been commendable, and their bravery and dedication are truly inspiring.

As we continue to face these wildfires, it is important for all of us to remain vigilant and follow any evacuation orders or safety precautions issued by local authorities. We must also do our part in preventing wildfires by being responsible with fire and following any burning bans or restrictions in place.

The dry conditions and gusty winds have created a dangerous situation, but we must not lose hope. Together, we can overcome these challenges and emerge stronger. Let us keep the affected communities in our thoughts and prayers, and support the brave men and women who are working tirelessly to contain these wildfires. With their efforts and our support, we can overcome this crisis and rebuild our beautiful Carolinas.
