His latest move? An ad for California Governor Gavin Newsom, in which he accuses Republicans of trying to “rig” the next election through redistricting.
The ad, released by Newsom’s campaign, features Obama speaking directly to the camera. He starts off by praising Newsom’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying, “Gavin Newsom has shown what strong, progressive leadership looks like.” He then goes on to warn viewers about the upcoming redistricting process, which will redraw the boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts based on the 2020 census.
Obama claims that Republicans are trying to “rig” the next election by manipulating the redistricting process in their favor. He says, “They want to draw those lines so that they can pick their voters, rather than the other way around.” He urges viewers to support Newsom and his efforts to ensure fair redistricting.
But is Obama’s claim really true? Are Republicans really trying to “rig” the next election through redistricting? The answer is not so clear-cut. While it is true that redistricting can be used to benefit one political party over another, it is not a one-sided issue. Both Democrats and Republicans have been guilty of gerrymandering, or manipulating district boundaries for political gain.
In fact, California, a state that is overwhelmingly Democratic, has a history of gerrymandering. In 2011, Democrats controlled the redistricting process and drew district lines that heavily favored their party. This resulted in a Democratic supermajority in the state legislature and a near-sweep of California’s congressional seats. So, while Obama may be quick to point fingers at Republicans, it’s important to remember that both parties have engaged in gerrymandering tactics.
Furthermore, the redistricting process is not solely controlled by one party. In California, an independent commission is responsible for drawing district lines. This commission is made up of 14 members, with equal representation from Democrats, Republicans, and those with no party preference. The commission is also required to hold public hearings and consider input from citizens before finalizing district boundaries. This ensures a fair and transparent process, rather than one party having complete control.
So, why is Obama inserting himself into this issue? Some may argue that he is simply trying to support a fellow Democrat and push his own political agenda. Others may see it as a way for him to remain relevant and in the public eye. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that Obama’s involvement in this ad is not without controversy.
