I tried Greek yoghurt from M&S, Asda and Tesco and preferred one to leading brand Fage

My favourite has been described as ‘almost better than ice cream’. How can something be almost better than the creamy, cold and indulgent delight that is ice cream? Well, let me tell you, there is something out there that comes pretty close to it – and it’s my absolute favourite.

It all started when I was a little kid, sitting in my grandparents’ backyard on a hot summer day, eagerly waiting for my grandpa to bring out the ice cream maker. The sound of the machine churning away and the anticipation of the sweet treat that was to come was enough to make my mouth water. Ever since then, ice cream has held a special place in my heart (and stomach).

But then, one day, I was introduced to something that would change my life forever. It was a hot summer day (as most of my favourite memories tend to be) and my friend suggested we try gelato instead of our usual ice cream. I was hesitant at first, thinking nothing could ever come close to my beloved ice cream, but I decided to give it a try. And let me tell you, from the first bite, I was hooked.

The creaminess and richness of gelato was like nothing I had ever tasted before. It was like ice cream, but better. It had a smoother texture and the flavours were more intense. It was like a party in my mouth with every spoonful. And the best part? It didn’t leave me with that heavy feeling in my stomach like ice cream sometimes does.

Since that fateful day, gelato has been my go-to whenever I want a sweet treat. Whether it’s a hot summer day or a cozy winter evening, gelato is always there to satisfy my cravings. And the best part is, it comes in so many different flavours that I never get bored. From classic favourites like chocolate and vanilla to more exotic and unique flavours like pistachio and stracciatella, there is always something new to try.

But what I love most about gelato is the way it is made. Unlike ice cream which is churned at a high speed, gelato is churned at a slower pace, allowing less air to be incorporated into it and resulting in a denser and creamier texture. It also uses more milk than cream, giving it a lower butterfat content. This means that not only is gelato more flavourful, but it is also a slightly healthier option. And who doesn’t love indulging in a guilt-free treat?

Another reason why gelato has become my favourite is because of the experience that comes with it. While ice cream is usually served in a cone or a bowl, gelato is traditionally served in a cup with a small spoon, allowing you to savour each bite and truly appreciate the flavours. And don’t even get me started on gelato served in a freshly made waffle cone – it’s a match made in heaven.

But perhaps the most important factor that sets gelato apart from ice cream is the love and passion that goes into making it. Gelato is an art form, perfected by Italian artisans who take great pride in their craft. Each batch of gelato is carefully crafted by hand, using only the finest ingredients to create a truly delicious and authentic product. And you can taste that love and passion in every single bite.

So, is gelato really almost better than ice cream? In my opinion, yes. While nothing can truly replace the joy and nostalgia that comes with eating ice cream, gelato offers a whole new level of deliciousness. Its creamy, rich texture, intense flavours, and unique experience make it stand out as a top contender for my favourite indulgence. And with summer just around the corner, I know exactly what I’ll be treating myself to on those hot days – a scoop (or two) of my favourite ‘almost better than ice cream’ gelato.
