I tried a Turkish hammam – on a terraced street in Old Trafford

We all know the feeling of being exhausted and in need of a good rejuvenation. It could be after a long day at work, a strenuous workout, or simply the accumulation of everyday stress. Whatever the reason, there’s nothing quite like a fresh, clean start to help us feel refreshed and ready to take on the world again. Recently, I had an experience that not only gave me a new perspective on self-care but also left me feeling like a brand new person. I was “scrubbed down like a tired old Honda in need of a good wash” and it was the most invigorating and revitalizing experience I’ve had in a long time.

I have always been a firm believer in taking care of oneself, both physically and mentally. However, with the busy and hectic lifestyle that comes with living in a big city, it’s easy to neglect our own well-being. That’s why when my friend suggested we try a Korean spa, I was hesitant at first but quickly intrigued by the idea. I had heard about the traditional Korean spa rituals and the benefits they offered, but I had never tried it before. Little did I know, it would be a life-changing experience.

As soon as we walked into the spa, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful, a stark contrast to the busy streets outside. We were greeted by the friendly staff and were given a tour of the facilities. The spa had various rooms for different treatments, and we were told that the most popular one was the full-body scrub.

I was led to a room with rows of plastic-covered beds, each with a small pillow and a plastic bowl. The room was dimly lit, and a soothing instrumental music played in the background. I was instructed to undress and lie down on the plastic-covered bed. At that moment, I felt a little self-conscious, lying naked on a bed in front of a stranger. But at the same time, I was also excited to try something new.

As soon as I lay down, the ajumma (a Korean word for an older woman) came in. She was dressed in a black swimsuit and had a bucket of warm water, a loofah, and her bare hands. The scrub started with a massage using the loofah, which was gentle yet invigorating. I could feel the dead skin being removed, and it was oddly satisfying. Then came the wash with the warm water, and it was like a warm hug for my tired muscles.

But the real magic happened when the ajumma started scrubbing with her bare hands. She worked her way from my feet, up my legs, all the way to my back. It was like she was using a combination of pressure and scrubbing motion, and it felt like a deep tissue massage. I could feel all the knots and tension in my muscles being worked out.

As she moved up to my arms and chest, she told me to flip over so she could scrub my front. At that moment, I realized I had forgotten about my nakedness and was fully immersed in the experience. And let me tell you, it was a full-body scrub indeed! The ajumma didn’t miss a single spot, and I could feel my skin getting smoother and softer with every scrub.

After what felt like an hour, the ajumma was done. She gently poured water over me and washed away all the dead skin and sweat. Then, she covered me with a warm towel and left the room. As I lay there, feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated, I couldn’t help but compare myself to a tired old Honda in need of a good wash. Just like a car, our bodies also accumulate dirt and grime, and sometimes we need a thorough scrub down to get rid of it all.

As I got dressed and stepped out of the room, I felt like a different person. My skin was glowing, and I felt like I had just shed all my stress and worries along with the dead skin cells. My friend and I continued to explore the spa, trying out different treatments and ending the day with a calming cup of traditional Korean tea.

From that day on, I have made it a point to visit the Korean spa regularly. Not only does the full-body scrub leave me feeling rejuvenated, but the entire spa experience is also therapeutic for my mind and body. It’s a reminder to take care of
