US security officials meet with lawmakers about mysterious drone flights

U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials in New Jersey came together with state and local lawmakers on Wednesday to address the recent surge of drone sightings throughout the state.

These mysterious nighttime flights, which began last month, have caused growing concern among residents and officials. The initial sightings were near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, as well as over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.

While drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, they are subject to both local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. In order to operate a drone, operators must be FAA certified.

Most of the drones spotted in New Jersey were larger than those typically used by hobbyists, causing even more alarm. However, officials have noted that the recent increase in sightings may be due to mistaken reports of planes, or even a single drone being reported multiple times.

Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have reassured the public that the drones do not pose a threat to public safety. The FBI has launched an investigation and has asked residents to share any videos, photos, or other information they may have.

Many local lawmakers have called for stricter regulations on who is allowed to operate drones. One state lawmaker even proposed a temporary ban on drone flights in the state.

Governor Murphy addressed the issue earlier this week, stating, “This is something we are taking very seriously. I understand the frustration of the public.” However, details about Wednesday’s meeting were not immediately disclosed and a spokesperson for the governor confirmed that he was not in attendance.

Republican Assemblyman Erik Peterson, whose district includes areas where the drones have been reported, stated that he and other legislators met with Homeland Security and state police officials for about 90 minutes at a state police facility in West Trenton.

According to Peterson, DHS officials were generous with their time but appeared to dismiss some of the concerns, stating that not all of the reported sightings have been confirmed to involve drones.

The biggest question on everyone’s mind is who or what is behind these flying objects? Where are they coming from and what are they doing? “My understanding is they have no clue,” Peterson said.

A message seeking comment on Peterson’s remarks was left with the Department of Homeland Security.

The majority of the drone sightings have been along coastal areas, with some recently reported flying over a large reservoir in Clinton. Sightings have also been reported in neighboring states, including the New York City area, and over Pennsylvania’s Delaware County and Philadelphia.

James Edwards of Succasunna, New Jersey, stated that he has seen a few drones flying over his neighborhood since last month. “It raises concern mainly because there is so much that is unknown,” Edwards said on Wednesday. “There are many people speculating about various conspiracies, but this only adds unnecessary fuel to the fire. We need to wait and see what is really happening here and not let fear of the unknown consume us.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the drone sightings, officials are working diligently to address the issue and ensure the safety of the public. As the investigation continues, it is important for residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumors or speculations. Let us trust in the authorities to handle the situation and provide us with updates as they become available.

In the meantime, it is crucial for drone operators to follow all regulations and restrictions set in place by the FAA and local authorities. We must also remember that drones can be a valuable tool for many industries, such as agriculture and search and rescue operations. Let us not allow these incidents to tarnish the reputation of drones and their potential benefits.

As we await more information on the drone sightings in New Jersey, let us remain united and trust in the efforts of our government and law enforcement officials. Together, we can ensure the safety and security of our communities.
