Special Agent Clint Hill, a dedicated member of the Secret Service who was famously assigned to protect President John F. Kennedy on the day he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, has passed away at the age of 93. VOA’s Kane Farabaugh, who had the privilege of interviewing Agent Hill multiple times over the years, shares the story of this remarkable man and his unwavering commitment to duty.
Born on January 4, 1932 in Larimore, North Dakota, Clinton J. Hill began his career in public service as a member of the Navy during the Korean War. After serving his country, he joined the Secret Service in 1958 and quickly rose through the ranks, earning the respect and trust of his peers.
On November 22, 1963, Hill was assigned to protect the beloved President Kennedy during his visit to Dallas. It was a day that would change the course of history, and Hill’s bravery and dedication in the face of danger would forever be remembered.
As the presidential motorcade drove through the streets of Dallas, Hill was close by the President’s side, ready to act at a moment’s notice. When the tragic shots rang out, Hill instinctively jumped onto the back of the presidential limousine in an effort to shield the President and First Lady from harm. He stayed by their side until they arrived at Parkland Hospital, where President Kennedy tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Despite his valiant efforts, Hill could not save the President, but his actions showed his unwavering dedication to his duty and his deep sense of loyalty to the United States. He continued to serve with the Secret Service until 1975, and in that time, he was praised for his professionalism, bravery, and commitment to the agency’s mission.
Over the years, Agent Hill became known for his remarkable story and his contribution to American history, and was often called upon to share his experiences with the public. In an interview with VOA, he recalled the moment when he knew that something was terribly wrong during the President’s motorcade.
“I heard a shot, which I thought was a firecracker. I turned towards the noise and I saw the President as he had his hands up to his throat. He slumped forward, and at that point I realized something was wrong,” Hill said.
Despite the devastating loss of President Kennedy, Hill remained dedicated to his work, and continued to protect Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Secret Service Medal of Valor, as well as the Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2012.
Throughout his career, Agent Hill embodied the true spirit of the Secret Service, always putting the safety and well-being of the President above his own. His remarkable bravery and dedication will continue to serve as an inspiration to future generations of Secret Service agents.
Agent Hill’s passing is truly a great loss for the Secret Service and for the country, but his legacy will live on. As President Obama stated in his tribute to Agent Hill, “He was one of the select few who have taken upon themselves the weight of the entire nation’s security. And, used to facing danger on a daily basis, he had extraordinary grace and rare strength of character.”
Special Agent Clint Hill will always be remembered as a true hero and a dedicated public servant who served his country with honor. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all Americans.
