Cobre Panamá has donated a 230m2 cultivation house to the University of Panama. This donation will provide students with the opportunity to establish a controlled environment for healthy fruit and vegetable cultivation.
(1/Feb/2022 – web) Panama.- Cobre Panamá is committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices in communities near its mine. In line with this objective, the company has made a generous donation to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama: a 230m2 cultivation house, also known as a tropicalized greenhouse.
“We want to express our sincere gratitude to the mining company for its valuable contribution to the strengthening of the Agroforestry Engineering program. Through this cultivation house, our students will become familiar with this technology, which has become increasingly relevant worldwide as it allows food production in limited spaces under a more environmentally friendly system,” said Fulgencio Álvarez, director of the Regional University Center of Coclé.
Thanks to this contribution, around 100 students from the Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering programs will have the valuable opportunity to acquire knowledge about the use of enclosed spaces that allow farmers to create a controlled microclimate. These spaces provide them with the ability to regulate temperature, environmental factors, and humidity, allowing them to obtain off-season crops, reduce water consumption through an automated irrigation system, and minimize the use of harmful chemicals for plants. This ensures the production of healthier fruits and vegetables for everyone.
In this context, Miguel Jaén, manager of Community Affairs at the mining company, encouraged students from the Regional Center to continue their studies and delve into these modern techniques.
“For the past 12 years, at Cobre Panamá, we have maintained a firm commitment to comprehensively address the educational cycle of people in our neighboring communities. Through a variety of programs, we provide support from early childhood to university. One of our prominent programs is the Comprehensive Schools, which includes components of sustainable production to ensure food supply in 70 educational centers, as well as offering higher education scholarships to motivate young people to pursue university studies,” concluded the Community Affairs manager.
This initiative also supports the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA).
In addition to the donation of the cultivation house, Cobre Panamá has provided a storage facility equipped with supplies, materials, and tools, as well as an irrigation system and cucumber seeds. These items will be essential for launching educational activities in the greenhouse and fostering learning in this field.
