The Kansas City Chiefs have been a dominant force in the NFL for the past few years, but it seems that their reign may be coming to an end. After losing the title of “team to beat” to the Philadelphia Eagles, many are quick to dismiss the Chiefs and their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. However, tight end Travis Kelce has a message for those who are counting out the Chiefs and their talented leader.
In a recent interview, Kelce made it clear that the Chiefs are not a team to be overlooked. He stated, “People should know better than to sleep on Patrick Mahomes.” And he’s absolutely right. Mahomes may have had a bit of a down year in 2020, but that doesn’t mean he’s lost his touch. In fact, he’s still one of the most talented and dynamic quarterbacks in the league.
It’s easy to forget just how incredible Mahomes has been since he burst onto the scene in 2018. In his first year as a starter, he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, earning him the league MVP award. He followed that up with another impressive season in 2019, leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory and earning Super Bowl MVP honors. And even in a “down” year in 2020, he still threw for over 4,700 yards and 38 touchdowns.
So why are people so quick to dismiss Mahomes and the Chiefs? It could be because they failed to defend their Super Bowl title in 2020, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the big game. Or it could be because the Chiefs have had some key players leave in free agency, including offensive lineman Eric Fisher and wide receiver Sammy Watkins. But one thing is for sure, Mahomes is not one to back down from a challenge.
Kelce also had some words of praise for his quarterback, saying, “He’s the most talented guy I’ve ever played with.” And that’s saying a lot, considering Kelce has played with some pretty talented quarterbacks in his career. But it’s not just Mahomes’ physical abilities that make him special. It’s his mental toughness and leadership that truly set him apart.
Mahomes has shown time and time again that he can handle pressure and come through in clutch situations. He’s led the Chiefs to multiple fourth-quarter comebacks and has a knack for making big plays when it matters most. And at just 25 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow and improve as a player.
But Mahomes isn’t the only reason the Chiefs should not be counted out. They still have a strong supporting cast, including Kelce himself, who is one of the best tight ends in the league. They also have speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill and a solid running game with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. And let’s not forget about their defense, which has some playmakers of its own, such as safety Tyrann Mathieu.
So while the Eagles may have taken the title of “team to beat” from the Chiefs, it would be foolish to overlook them. Mahomes and the Chiefs may have some challenges ahead, but they have proven time and time again that they are a resilient and talented team. And with Kelce’s warning message about Mahomes, it’s clear that the Chiefs are ready to prove the doubters wrong and reclaim their spot at the top of the NFL.
