Heading into Week 14 against the division-rival Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers were hoping to come out with an easy win against a team that has really struggled as of late. Unfortunately for San Francisco, the Seahawks came to play on Sunday and did not make it easy for Brock Purdy and company.
The Seahawks used a play from last season to score against the 49ers. With just over six minutes left in the second quarter, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson connected with wide receiver DK Metcalf for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The play was a carbon copy of the play the 49ers ran against the Seahawks in Week 10 of last season.
On that play, San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo connected with wide receiver Deebo Samuel for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The play was designed to take advantage of the Seahawks’ defense, which was playing a Cover 3 look.
The Seahawks were able to use the same play against the 49ers on Sunday. Wilson connected with Metcalf on a slant route, and the wide receiver was able to get open in the end zone for the touchdown.
The 49ers were able to respond with a touchdown of their own, as Purdy connected with tight end George Kittle for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The 49ers were able to take a 14-10 lead into halftime, but the Seahawks were able to take the lead in the second half and eventually win the game 27-24.
The 49ers will now have to regroup and prepare for their next game against the Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco will need to find a way to get back on track and get back to their winning ways if they want to make the playoffs this season.
The Seahawks’ ability to use a play from last season to score against the 49ers shows just how much they have improved since last season. Seattle is now in a position to make a run for the playoffs, and they will be a tough team to beat down the stretch.
The 49ers will have to be ready for the Seahawks when they meet again in Week 16. San Francisco will need to be prepared and make sure they don’t make the same mistakes they made in Week 14. If the 49ers can do that, they will be in a good position to make a run for the playoffs.
