“: The All-Encompassing Concept of Health in Spanish”

Salud, the Spanish word for “health,” holds a lot of meaning and importance in our daily lives. It is not just a state of physical well-being, but also encompasses mental and emotional well-being. And this is exactly what Salud Than, a student organization at the University of Pennsylvania, aims to promote and foster among its members.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, Salud Than has been making a positive impact on the community since its inception. Gajare, who is majoring in Health & Societies with a concentration in Global Health, was inspired to start this organization after his own experiences with the healthcare system.
Growing up in a multicultural household, Gajare witnessed the disparities and inequalities in healthcare access and treatment. This motivated him to bring about change and create a platform where students from diverse backgrounds could come together to learn and advocate for health equity.
Salud Than, with its motto “Empowering the community, one step at a time,” has been successful in achieving its goals by organizing various events and activities that promote health and wellness. From educational workshops to community service events, the organization has been actively involved in spreading awareness and making a positive impact.
One of the most notable events organized by Salud Than is the annual Health Fair. This event brings together various healthcare organizations and professionals to provide free health screenings, consultations, and information to the local community. It not only benefits the community but also provides a valuable learning experience for the members of Salud Than.
Another event that has been a huge success is the Mental Health Awareness Week. With the rising concern for mental health issues, Salud Than has taken the initiative to break the stigma and raise awareness about mental health. The week-long event includes workshops, panel discussions, and interactive activities that encourage open conversations about mental health and self-care.
Apart from organizing events, Salud Than also partners with other organizations to volunteer at health clinics and community health fairs. This gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the community in a meaningful way. As a member of Salud Than, I have personally had the opportunity to participate in these events and it has been a rewarding experience.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Salud Than is its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity. The organization welcomes students from all backgrounds, cultures, and majors, making it a truly diverse and inclusive community. This not only fosters a sense of belonging but also encourages students to learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives.
In addition to promoting health and wellness, Salud Than also raises awareness about social issues that affect health. Recently, the organization organized a panel discussion on healthcare disparities within marginalized communities, shedding light on the inequalities in access to healthcare and its impact on overall health.
However, Salud Than’s positive impact goes beyond the borders of UPenn. Gajare, the founder and president of the organization, has been recognized for his efforts in promoting health equity. In 2019, he was selected as one of the 2020 Forbes Under 30 Scholars, and in 2020, he was chosen as one of the 2021 Schwarzman Scholars. These achievements not only reflect Gajare‘s dedication and hard work but also the impact of Salud Than in the community.
Unfortunately, even in today’s progressive society, there are still instances of discrimination and hatred. And Salud Than has been quick to address and condemn such actions. When an Anti-Semitic incident occurred on campus, Salud Than, along with other student organizations, stood in solidarity with the Jewish community and organized a peaceful protest. This act of unity and support showcases the values and principles that Salud Than stands for.
In conclusion, Salud Than has been a beacon of positivity and change at UPenn. With its commitment to promoting health and wellness, diversity and inclusivity, and addressing social issues, the organization has made a lasting impact on its members and the community. As a member of Salud Than, I am proud to be a part of such a dynamic and inspiring organization, and I am excited to see the continued growth and success in the years to come.
