Salud is a Spanish word that means “health” or “wellness”. It is often used as a toast when raising a glass in celebration or good wishes. But for many students at the University of Pennsylvania, Salud has come to mean much more than just a simple toast. It has become a home away from home, a community that embraces diversity and promotes positivity and well-being. And this is all thanks to Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud and a student at UPenn.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, noticed that many students on campus were struggling with mental health issues, whether it be stress, anxiety, or depression. He also noticed a lack of resources and support for students who come from marginalized communities. Being a minority himself, Gajare knew firsthand the challenges and obstacles that students face when it comes to mental health. And he decided to do something about it.
In the fall of 2018, Gajare founded Salud, a student-run organization that focuses on promoting mental and emotional well-being among students at UPenn. The organization aims to create a safe and inclusive space for students from all backgrounds to come together and support each other.
One of the main programs that Salud offers is the Peer Mentorship Program, where upperclassmen act as mentors to underclassmen, providing them with guidance, support, and advice on various aspects of college life. This program has been a huge success, with many students reporting that having a mentor has helped them navigate through the challenges of college life and has improved their overall well-being.
Salud also hosts various events and workshops throughout the year, focusing on different aspects of mental health and wellness. These events range from yoga and meditation sessions to panel discussions on topics such as self-care, healthy relationships, and coping with stress. The organization also collaborates with other student groups and university departments to bring in speakers and experts to discuss important issues related to mental health and well-being.
But perhaps one of the most impactful initiatives of Salud is its inclusivity and diversity. The organization is open to all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. This creates a sense of belonging and acceptance, which is crucial for individuals who come from marginalized backgrounds and may not feel represented or supported in traditional mental health spaces.
Salud also does not shy away from discussing sensitive topics and issues. In fact, the organization has been praised for its courage and openness in addressing topics such as mental health in the LGBTQ+ community and the impact of discrimination and prejudice on mental well-being. This has helped create a dialogue and awareness about these important issues and has provided a safe space for students to share their experiences and seek support.
Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud, has been recognized for his amazing work in promoting mental health and well-being among students at UPenn. However, he has also faced backlash and discrimination for his efforts. In 2019, Gajare was targeted with Anti-Semitic graffiti, which was a devastating blow to the Salud community. But instead of letting it bring them down, the Salud community rallied together, showing support and solidarity for Gajare and each other. This incident only strengthened the bond and resilience of the Salud community and showcased the power of positivity and inclusivity.
Salud has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the students at UPenn. It has created a community that supports and uplifts each other, promoting healthy and open conversations about mental health. Students have reported feeling more connected and less alone, and many have found the courage to seek help and support thanks to the safe and inclusive space that Salud provides.
In the words of Neil Gajare himself, “Salud is a celebration of life. It is a space where we come together to build each other up and to create a culture of wellness and inclusivity”. And this is exactly what Salud has achieved at UPenn – a culture of wellness and inclusivity that is helping students thrive and succeed both academically and personally.
So, here’s a toast to Salud, to Neil Gajare, and to all the students who have been a part of this amazing community. May your future continue to be filled with positivity, support, and well-being. Salud!
