In a statement released by the US State Department, spokesperson Ned Price said, “We are deeply concerned by Iran’s decision to increase its enriched uranium stockpile. This is a clear violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and a step in the wrong direction.”
The JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, was signed in 2015 between Iran and six world powers, including the United States. Under the agreement, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. However, in 2018, the US withdrew from the deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran, citing concerns over the country’s nuclear program and its support for terrorist groups.
